George Floyd, Institutionalized Racism & Bollywood Hypocrisy

‘I can’t breathe’, ‘My back hurts’ are some of the last words muttered by George Floyd before he was purposefully murdered by an ex-coworker, fired policeman and now a convicted murder Derek Chauvin. While the whole world mourns his tragic death, social media has been boiling with fury and indignation following this incident. Racism continues to be a perpetual dilemma in the United States, but this particular incident sparked an unparalleled outrage among the folks, especially in the US.

Protests and riots have become an everyday occurrence since people took it to the streets to raise their voices against this appalling deed. Hashtags like #BlackLivesMatter and #JusticeforGeogeFloyd have been trending on Twitter for days on. Renowned celebrities like David Schwimmer (better known as the Ross Geller from the popular TV sitcom Friends), along with ex-wife, Zoe Buckman, too have joined the protests to show their solidarity.

Many Bollywood figures too have expressed their views on social media platforms on this. While I respect their empathy, I simply cannot understand the sentiment behind the act of some of the #heartbroken actors. How can a person, who has appeared in several ads and campaigns for fairness cream products claim to believe in the concept of #AllLivesMatter? These so called ‘Woke Indian Celebrities’ are now vouching for people of color when they themselves preach of ‘gorapan’ and endorse such morally debasing products. It’s the sheer hypocrisy that baffles me the most.

#WakeUpWorld and judge for yourself who is truly an egalitarian and who’s just looking to hog publicity by being a part of the herd. Let’s spread love and harmony by being true to ourselves and not just to become a part of P.R. propaganda.
