Andy Bernard Is No Michael Scott : Lethal Decision

Andy Bernard's attempt to replace Michael Scott in The Office was a very incompetent choice on part of the producers. He could never be as absurd and unreasonable as Michael. Michael had a very idiosyncratic persona that made you hate his guts and love him dearly at the same time. His aura was completely eccentric and that's exactly what held the show together for 7 long years. Uncasting him was one of the biggest mistakes the makers of the show could've made.

Andy was not half as irrational and ludicrous as Micheal was. There was just something about Michael that made you wanna rip his arms off at one particular moment. And the very next moment, he could woo you with his soft and gullible nature and empathetic attitude. I see all these nuances on the show where the producers and writers have busted their balls to bring about that Michael-ness in Andy but it just seems very undesirable and inappropriate on him.

To be honest, one of the reasons this replication failed would be that Andy had a very peculiar charisma of his own. He had been in this on again off again relationship with the new receptionist Erin Hannon. God what is it with this show and receptionists, right? He was this megalomaniac with anger issues who did theater and occasionally jammed. In fact, I felt the writers were conjuring him to be one of the sane guys of the lot that gives a touch of reality and functionalism to the show.

But he was no Michael. Andy was never able to do justice to the lovely unique character that Michael had built up. This show needed a Michael and depriving it of the same was asinine and probably what killed this witty and amazing sitcom before its time.

  1. I am on season-2 and I can't imagine anyone playing Michael Scott than Steve Carrel. He is THE reason the show works!
